Girl, 8, Dies After Being Found In Baltimore Basement With Gunshot Wound To Chest

An 8-year-old girl who was found in the basement of a Towson home in Baltimore County with critical injuries died after being shot, authorities announced.

Officers from the Baltimore County Towson Precinct responded to the 6300 block of Sherwood Road shortly before 9: 30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, where there was a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found an 8-year-old shooting victim in the basement of the home. She was rushed to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.

According to a report, the child was playing with a handgun when it accidentally discharged into her chest.

Hours after the shooting, the Baltimore County Police Department announced that the shooting was fatal early on Thursday, Aug. 4.

“The young shooting victim involved in this case did not survive,” a spokesperson for the agency announced. “While (Baltimore County Police) homicide detectives believe this was an isolated incident, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continues.”
